Background and Objectives

The SYVADEC is a union responsible for the treatment and recovery of household waste in Corsica. It plays a key role in the environmental transition of the island and in a context where citizen awareness is essential to reduce the ecological impact, SYVADEC wanted to better understand the relationship between residents to the environment, particularly in terms of sorting and reducing waste.

The aim of this study was to:

  • Identify the obstacles and levers to better sorting practices;
  • Assess satisfaction with the public waste management service;
  • Measure understanding of sorting instructions and associated taxation;
  • Identify sustainable behaviors already adopted and those to be encouraged.

These elements will allow SYVADEC to adapt its communication actions and its public policy to the concrete expectations of citizens.

Study procedure

To carry out this mission, SYVADEC called on SKEMA Conseil. SKEMA's Junior Enterprise has mobilized its skills in statistical analysis, market research and strategic consulting through a two-step approach:

  • A quantitative phase : 500 residents questioned through a structured questionnaire, followed by statistical analyses to identify reliable trends.
  • A qualitative phase : study of open responses and analysis of feelings, supported by word processing and semantic coding tools to refine the understanding of the opinions expressed.

The results were synthesized in a operational report, integrating concrete recommendations to guide future SYVADEC decisions.

Study results

The study allowed SYVADEC to obtain a clear mapping of Corsicans' expectations and perceptions in the face of waste management.

Among the major lessons:

  • Residents strongly associate sorting with the protection of their territory, but express a real need for better readability of instructions and associated taxation.
  • Certain practical obstacles have been identified, particularly in rural areas, allowing SYVADEC to readjust its collection system.
  • The analysis also highlighted profiles of particularly engaged citizens, paving the way for a more targeted communication and to better adapted local campaigns.

Following this study, SYVADEC has adjusted its pricing policy and launched a segmented awareness campaign around the identified behaviors, thus strengthening the effectiveness of its actions.

Impact and perspectives

This collaboration marks a structuring step in SYVADEC's environmental strategy.

Thanks to the results of the study, the union now has a more precise vision of local expectations and she was able to put in place the resulting actions.

For SKEMA Conseil, this mission was an experience of concrete commitment to serving the general interest.

The study also made it possible toopen the way to new collaborations, particularly around awareness-raising projects and monitoring of environmental performance.

Speaker's testimony

"This mission allowed us to work closely with residents and measure the concrete impact of our contribution. Seeing SYVADEC integrate our recommendations into its actions particularly motivated us."
